Jazz for the People!

What a festival!  Great music. Great performances. Great crowds. Great fun.  Great day for Jazz!

The 11th annual Freedom Jazz Festival was all that and much more!

The afternoon’s musical journey began with the Jazz Workshop of McRae Park, Urban Cadence, Best Kept Secret and Kathleen
Johnson.  Master musician James “Cornbread” Harris was presented with a Freedom Jazz All Star award and Cornbread
followed up with an impromptu performance to the crowd’s delight.  The second half of the festival began with the Voice of
Culture Drum and Dance with special performances by the visiting Ugandan Orphans Choir was fantastic!  The Capri Big Band
and the legendary Morris Wilson who received the Sam Favors Memorial Award ended the memorable “Jazz for the People”
concert.  Minnehaha Park is a perfect location for great music and community gatherings in the Twin Cities.

Music fans from all over the Twin Cities came to Minnehaha Park to be part of the most successful Freedom Jazz Festivals ever.

"The turnout for the festival far exceeded our expectations," said Reona Berry, festival coordinator. "The crowds were amazing.
The strong fan support this year made all the countless hours preparing for the festival worthwhile.

"The festival committee offers its sincere appreciation and thanks to all the fans, the artists, the vendors, the donors, the
sponsors, the volunteers, and anyone who helped make this festival a huge success.

"The jazz festival is a success because the entire community embraces the event and makes artists and fans feel welcome.
That's why the artists love performing here and the fans keep coming back,” states festival committee chair, Lamarr Scott.  “Jeff
Keys put together a great line up this year and kept it grooving through the rain and interruptions.”

"Now it time to start preparing for the 2012 festival”.

Mark your calendars! The festival committee is going to work very hard to make the 2012 festival even better.
